Brewniversity’s Gender Studies 423: Women and Craft Beer

Join us at 7pm on Monday April 23nd at Bocktown's Beaver Valley Mall location for this one-of-a-kind PCBW event!

Brewniversity will host an overview of the role of women in the local and national craft beer industry, with a discussion about how craft beer is a gender neutral movement, unlike stereotypical “beer culture.” The main portion of the event will be spent on palate education using the “beer wheel.” Everyone will take a sample of their beer, then check the flavors they think they taste on the beer wheel. Speakers leading the event will discuss what they taste and do some Q&A with each beer.

Speakers:
Chris Dilla, Bocktown Beer and Grill
Angela Maffessanti, Founder Pittsburgh Beer Ladies
Amanda Bowen, Vecenie Distributing Company
Marta Napoleone T.R.A.S.H. Homebrewer and Aldo’s Food Service

Cost: $25 Proceeds to Operation Walk Pittsburgh
Craft beer samples and light refreshments provided.

Please Note: This is a ticketed event and it will sell out! Link here to purchase via Pittsburgh Brewniversity.

This event was graciously designed by Pittsburgh Brewniversity. Learn more here.

Spring 2012 Events

Greetings, craft beer ladies! We have a lot of exciting events in the works for the upcoming months. Including, but not limited to, the following:

Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week
The Pittsburgh Beer Ladies will be taking part in Pittsburgh's 1st annual craft beer week. This event was created in conjunction with Pittsburgh Brewniversity and is currently scheduled for Monday, April 23 from 7:00PM-8:30PM. This event, open to both women and men, will begin with an overview of the role of women in the local and national craft beer industry. The main portion of this event will be spent on education using the "beer wheel." Attendees will sample various beers and mark the flavors they think they taste on the beer wheel. The person leading the event will discuss the tasting notes for each beer and entertain questions so everyone understands how to describe what it is they are tasting.

Copper Kettle Brewing Company
Have you ever wanted to brew your own beer but didn't know where to start? Let the PBL and Copper Kettle Brewing Company help you out. Copper Kettle, right next to Hough's Tap Room and Brew Pub, has the all equipment and the recipes. In May, those wanting to take part will be divided into groups of 5 (only 5 people can be on a kettle) and assigned a beer. When we're all done, we can swap bottles...which leads us to our June event.

PBL Beer Swap
In June, PBL will be renting a park and having our 1st annual beer swap! This event will be also open to spouses and significant others of the male persuasion. Those attending will bring a case of one of their favorite brews to share with the group. We will also bring samples of our Copper Kettle beer so those who couldn't make it to the previous event may sample our creations.

As you can see, we have quite a bit planned so please stay tuned for details! More information on all the these events, as well as any others added, will be posted soon. If you have any questions or would like us to visit a particular venue or feature a specific brewery, please feel free to post here or send me an email.

Cheers!

Tasting Education

Have you ever tried a beer, loved it, but couldn't put your finger on exactly what it was about the beer you loved? Unless you're an expert on hops, esters, yeasts, and so forth, chances are you've found yourself in this exact situation. I know I have. The Pittsburgh Beer Ladies are working on an event that takes attendees beyond just tasting; beyond this is an IPA, this is an imperial stout. Stayed tuned. More information about this educational advanced tasting will be posted soon!

Cheers!

Upcoming events

Hello, ladies! I was reminded that I have not updated this blog recently. Definitely not a good thing. We've already had one event this year created and hosted by Brooke Franus. It was a fantastic beer and chocolate event held at the Carson Street Deli on February 13th. If you missed it, not to worry. There are currently two other events scheduled. And they are:

Tap Takeover at Beer Nutz
Thursday, February 3rd, 5pm to 10pm
Every Thursday, Beer Nutz hosts what they call a Tap Takeover. They generally have a representative from a different brewery there and do tastings. Occasionally, they'll focus on a specific type of beer instead of a specific brewery. The event is set up from 5-10pm to accommodate ladies coming directly from work, and also for those who can't get there until later. To RSVP, Click here.

Sampling at Barley's and Hop's
Wednesday, March 7th, 7pm
Barley's and Hop's Bottle Shop and Cafe offers an enormous variety of imports and microbrews. On Wednesday, March 7th at 7pm, they will host a beer sampling for us. There will be a nominal fee associated with this tasting. As soon as I have the beer list and cost, I'll post it here. To RSVP, Click here.
For more information about Barley's and Hop's, visit http://barleysandhops.homestead.com.

We have a lot of other exciting events in the works, so check back soon! Cheers!

Hoppy Holidays!

Beer ladies! I wanted to take a moment to wish you all a wonderful holiday! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, happy whatever-it-is-you-celebrate! Enjoy your friends and family and holiday beers.

On January 12th at 7pm, we will be having a planning meeting at Hough's. You all are welcome to attend as this is your club, too. We do now have a core planning committee, but value everyone's input.

While we figure out which venue/brewery will be next, we may have a tasting at TheBeerHive at the end of January. They contacted me about perhaps having something at their location. Hey, it's a great place and the events are free. Some possible options for the beginning of the year are Hough's, Barley's & Hop's, D's, Bocktown, Draai Laag Brewery and others.

Cheers! See you all next year!

Rogue Brewery Tasting

Our next event will be at The BeerHive (2117 Penn Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15222) in Strip District from 7:00pm to 9pm on Saturday, November 19th! The event will take place on the 2nd floor and will involve a tasting of five different beers from Rogue Brewery. A representative from Fuhrer will introduce each beer. The samples will come in individual 7 ounce bottles. You can't find them anywhere else in the city! This will be a free event! Thank you, The BeerHive!

The beers are:
Rogue YSB
Old Crustacean
Imperial IPA
Rogue McScotch
Imperial Stout

All 5 of these beers are being discontinued in Pittsburgh! So these are the last remaining bottles in the city!

Also, Fuhrer will be purchasing 20 drafts of the Rogue Chipotle from The Beer Hive, as a gift to the Pittsburgh Beer Ladies! Thank you, Fuhrer! This event is going to be awesome!
